a mindful living room refresh part 1 : a collaboration with Overstock
As 2018 came to a close I was spending lots of time reflecting on how I wanted to move forward and feel in our home as a family in the year ahead. For me, creating an intentional space where you can reduce life stressors and feel ease and simplicity in your surroundings is a foundation of my work and extends into the home environment. Though each iteration of my interior style has been something we’ve loved (of course there were a few hiccups along the way!) the needs of our family and as individuals was changing, I wanted our home to reflect and support that.
My husband had been working in Dubai for more than a year and I wanted to welcome him home with an updated living area that would better accommodate our family of 3 especially given that our teen was now over 6 feet tall as well as reflect the internal changes we’d all made and wanted to integrate going forward.
Our lives the past year had been complex, even felt heavy living in two different parts of the world, literally night and day apart. I was looking to create a lighter, spacious yet simplified and overall more cohesive feel, to compliment the energy we were all craving for this next year. I decided it was time to move our space from the layered darker Bohemian feels to a more modern, elegant feel while still carrying a retro vibe.
During one of our visits in Dubai we spent time in the Burj Kalifa which had an entire seating area done in acrylic bubble chairs.
Once I got hooked (became obsessed) on that idea, I knew an update could take shape around this modern yet still somewhat retro style. A living room refresh based on a bubble chair! Totally logical right?
We all loved them so much I thought it would be fun to replace our basket chair with an acrylic one and provide a touchstone in our home of a great memory from time together in Dubai.
Living in Montana I wanted to be sure to have some earthy elements mixed in as well. Overstock was the perfect partner to help me bring this vision to life. Finding this Eero Aarnio Style Bubble Chair was the beginning of what ended up being an entire living room makeover which I’ll share more on in my next post.
Overstock has a huge selection of from modern to rustic which was great for me as I wanted both. Our beloved existing coffee table wasn’t going to work with the new direction I was going, yet I still wanted to keep some of the raw wood element. I chose this Hunter gray stump accent table. The gray felt a bit more modern to me while still bringing in an element of rustic. It was a great compliment to our Meghan Purcell fiber art as well.
The changing look led me back to my love of chrome and I was ready to swap out some of my brass accents for the retro mod feel that comes with chrome. The Hans Andersen Home Fishburne Glass Coffee Table was something I’d been eyeing for months prior to this refresh. This table was a game changer. It worked so well with the acrylic chair tying in that lightweight feel, yet it’s so sturdy, something living with my boys requires! Also known as coffee table must support kicked-up feet.
All of the Overstock items have paired gorgeously with the rest of our updated living room. Here are some before and after shots of the changes. I’ll be doing another post soon where I’ll share more details on the way this living room update created positive change throughout our home.
Here are a couple of the more bohemian before images.
I will be back next week sharing an more in-depth story of our year apart along with the entire living room reveal and all the befores of this space from the past 3 years! So be sure to check back.
With gratitude and cheers,
